From 1923 to 1991, Bethlehem Steel was one of the world's leading producers of railroad freight cars following their purchase of Midvale Steel, whose railcar division was located in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Bethlehem Steel Freight Car Division pioneered the use of aluminum in freight car construction. The Johnstown plant was purchased from Bethlehem Steel through a management buyout in 1991, creating Johnstown America Industries.

Many of the buildings Sands saved will be incorporated into the resort, which will feature a hotel, restaurants, shops, entertainment areas and a casino with 3,000 slot machines. Sands, owner of the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, began pouring concrete for the casino this month. With so many buildings still standing, “there’s an enormous amount of interpretation that can be done. You can’t find that anywhere else in the world,” said Amey Senape, who manages the Lehigh Valley Industrial Heritage Coalition, an alliance of community groups that is helping to coordinate preservation efforts at Bethlehem Steel. No one knows how much it will cost to preserve the Bethlehem Steel story, or who will agree to pay for what. But Sands has already saved 20 buildings from the wrecking ball, and those who are passionate about “the Steel” say that some kind of public access is a certainty.

At the state level, Democrats are hoping to hold on to their majority in the state House and take control of the state Senate. Democrats currently hold a two-seat majority in the state House, and Republicans hold a five-seat majority in the state Senate. If Pennsylvania Democrats hold their narrow majority in the state House and win the state Senate in November, it would give Gov. Shapiro enormous power to pass his agenda in the last two years of his term. While the area leans Republican, Democrats say they can win over independents and moderate conservatives in the area with a message centered around protecting democracy. Then legalized gambling came to Pennsylvania, with the state awarding Sands a coveted slots license on the strength of its ambitious plan for Bethlehem Steel and its promise to honor the company’s history. By the close of the 20th century, however, bloated labor costs and foreign competition had helped spell the demise of Bethlehem Steel and many other domestic producers. Steelmaking in Bethlehem ended Nov. 18, 1995, and the plant became the nation’s largest brownfield. Ideas for redevelopment came and went, and many of the historic structures were in danger of being torn down.

In 1991, Bethlehem Steel Corporation discontinued coal mining it had been conducting under the name BethEnergy and the company exited the railroad car business two years later, in 1993. In 1992, the Johnstown plants of the Bethlehem Steel, which had been founded in 1852 by The Cambria Iron Company of Johnstown and were purchased by Bethlehem Steel in 1923, were forced into closure. Bethlehem Steel Corporation installed the Gray rolling mill and produced the first wide-flange structural shapes to be made in the United States. These shapes were partly responsible for ushering in the age of the skyscraper and establishing Bethlehem Steel as the leading supplier of steel to the construction industry.

Bethlehem Steel Corporation became the second largest steel provider in the United States. Both the Bethlehem Steel Company and the Bethlehem Steel Corporation existed simultaneously after 1904 until the 1960s, when the two companies were merged into the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. The two second-class battleships, the USS Texas and the USS Maine, both had large-caliber guns with 12-inch and 10-inch, respectively, and heavy armor plating. The company continued to prosper during the early 1880s, but its share of the rail market began to decline in the face of competition from growing Pittsburgh and Scranton-based firms, such as the Carnegie Steel Company and Lackawanna Steel.

The steel industry in the U.S. prospered during and after World War II, while the steel industries in Germany and Japan lay devastated by allied bombardments. Bethlehem Steel's success reached its peak in the late 1950s and early 1960s as the company began manufacturing 23 million tons of steel annually. In 1958, the company's president, Arthur B. Homer, was the highest-paid U.S. business executive, and the firm built the first phase of what would become its largest plant, Burns Harbor between 1962 and 1964 in Burns Harbor, Indiana. Bethlehem Steel survived the earliest declines in the American steel industry beginning in the 1970s. In 1982, however, the company suspended most of its steelmaking operations after posting a loss of $1.5 billion, attributable to increased foreign competition, rising labor and pensions costs, and other factors. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2001 and final dissolution in 2003 when its remaining assets were sold to International Steel Group.

The company’s economic might was symbolized by the 1,500-foot-long No. 2 Machine Shop, once the world’s largest, and by the 20-story blast furnaces that have dominated Bethlehem’s skyline for 100 years. Sands has consistently expressed support for the goal of telling the Steel’s story. The company has already dedicated the oldest building on the site, the circa-1860s Stock House, to the city for use as a visitors center.

Homeless encampments are on the ballot in Arizona. Could California, other states follow?

All 17 members of Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation are running for re-election in 2024 and three of those incumbents are facing serious primary challengers. Several others are also watching to see who their opponent will be in the fall. And, in some cases, the outcome of Tuesday’s races could determine which way those seats swing on Election Day. International Steel Group, in turn, was acquired by Mittal Steel in 2005, which then merged with Arcelor to become ArcelorMittal in 2006. The company's steel was used in the construction of many of America's largest and most famed structures. Among major buildings, Bethlehem produced steel for 28 Liberty Street, the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, Rockefeller Center, and the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City and Merchandise Mart in Chicago.

In 1898, Frederick Winslow Taylor joined Bethlehem Steel as a management consultant in order to solve an expensive machine shop capacity problem. Taylor and Maunsel White, with a team of assistants, applied a series of management principles established by Taylor, which would later come to be known as scientific management and was used in increasing mass production. It may also forecast how other progressives facing similar challenges from moderate Democrats could fair in their races. The primary results in this pivotal swing state are certain to reveal insights about the major issues shaping the general election, namely on abortion and the Israel-Hamas war. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have essentially clinched their party’s 2024 nominations for the White House. But Pennsylvania voters on Tuesday will cast their ballots in a slew of contentious and potentially decisive congressional and state races that are still sure to make waves as the campaign chugs toward November.

She has framed the incumbent's criticism of Israel as detrimental to Biden’s re-election efforts and unrepresentative of a district that is home to a large Jewish community. Abortion has roiled down-ballot races across the country, and Pennsylvania is no exception. Reproductive rights have been a major topic in the attorney general’s race and in the Republican primary for the 1st Congressional District.

In the 1930s, the company also manufactured the steel sections and parts for the Golden Gate Bridge and built for Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales (YPF), a new oil refinery in La Plata, Argentina, which was the tenth-largest in the world. The other candidates include Harrisburg City Council member Shamaine Daniels, progressive businessman John Broadhurst and former radio executive Black Lynch. There are several other high-profile House primary races to watch in Pennsylvania.

Among major bridges, Bethlehem steel was used in constructing the George Washington Bridge and Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in New York City, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and the Peace Bridge between Buffalo and Fort Erie, Ontario. By the end of 1995, Bethlehem Steel closed steel-making at its main Bethlehem plant. After roughly 140 years of metal production at in Bethlehem, Bethlehem Steel ceased its Bethlehem operations. Two years later, in 1997, Bethlehem Steel Corporation ceased shipbuilding activities in an attempt to preserve its steel-making operations. In 2001, however, Bethlehem Steel filed for bankruptcy and, in 2003, the company dissolved.

On May 1, 1861, the company's title was changed again, this time to the Bethlehem Iron Company.[2] Construction of the first blast furnace began on July 1, 1861, and was operationalized on January 4, 1863. The first rolling mill was built between the spring of 1861 and the summer of 1863 with the first railroad rails being rolled on September 26, 1863. A machine shop, in 1865, and another blast furnace, in 1867, were completed. During its early years, the company produced rails for the rapidly expanding railroads and armor plating used by the U.S. Bethlehem Steel's roots trace to an iron-making company organized in 1857 in Bethlehem, which was later named the Bethlehem Iron Company.

If inflation is taken into account, these sums are approximately $188 and $1,881 respectively. Thankfully, such prices were warranted, as the food at Delmonico's was deemed to be superb. Prior to Delmonico's, most Americans ate a cold, packed lunch — usually sandwiches they'd prepared in the morning. However, the restaurant's location in New York's commercial district soon saw locals exchanging their sandwiches for sit down, hot lunches consisting of French classics.

If you're looking for a beef-filled dinner that isn't just another big slab of steak and a side of potatoes, Matū is an excellent option to keep in mind. Whenever we need a break from the chaos and congestion of this century, we take a drive up to this 19th-century general-store-turned-saloon in the Santa Monica Mountains. The Old Place has a Wild West aesthetic that's not unlike what you'll find in Pioneertown. Except here you'll eat American comfort staples like chicken pot pie, fruit cobblers in cast-iron pans, and something called a "noodle bake" comprised of thick egg noodles smothered in three kinds of cheese.

In 2023, Darden announced that they were opening 100 new locations by the end of 2024, and while they didn't get into specific numbers, that included somewhere between 13 and 20 new LongHorn locations. That's great news for everyone, from diners looking forward to a date night that doesn't involve Netflix, to industry workers who are looking forward to getting some kind of stability back in their lives. As you might have guessed by the name, Charcoal, located exactly on the border between Marina Del Rey and Venice, is pretty into grilling things. Steaks here come out exactly how you ask for them to be cooked, with plenty of the housemade chimichurri and barbecue sauces on the side. Take your pick between prime skirt steak, ribeye, and sirloin, but if you're ordering for a group, just get the ribeye. In Redondo Beach, this elegant steakhouse does beef exceedingly well with a wood-fried sear on the outside while maintaining a juicy, tender core.

#23. Mastro's Steakhouse

The fact that this massive steakhouse is right next door to Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills should tell you something. But if you’re looking to wear a suit and spend too much money on beef and cabernet, this place delivers. The steaks are all prime cuts that have been wet-aged for 28 days—our favorite is the bone-in ribeye with its even sear and spot-on temperature. It doesn't come with sides, so we suggest adding on the creamed spinach and sweet corn creme brulee for a well-rounded meal. Dry aged for weeks or months and carefully prepared by chefs, the steaks at steakhouses achieve a tenderness and flavor that's difficult, if not impossible, to achieve at home. Every city has its own list of storied steakhouses and every suburb has an Outback Steakhouse.

One of the unnamed reporter's first comments revolves around the steakhouse's reputation as a fine-dining destination. They note that such a reputation makes for intimidating dining; Delmonico's waiters were known to sneer if patrons asked for a low quality wine or did not order their dishes in the "correct" sequence. That being said, once patrons had ordered, they could expect the best service imaginable. The reporter notes that the serving of all food and drink was precise, stylish, and performed by an impressively well-presented team of waiters. In contrast to modern steakhouses, patrons did not choose from multiple cuts of meat.

#12. Bourbon Steak Los Angeles

Ranhofer's excellent cooking was one of the main reasons he attained such fame. Another was his willingness to create dishes that catered to the tastes and whims of his regular patrons. The chef's creations included the now famous chicken à la king and lobster Newburg. Some people even suggest Ranhofer created the popular dessert, baked Alaska.

"People are not going to stop eating meat, so why not offer an option where it is done right," Englehart said. "I no longer feel that a vegan lifestyle for all is a viable solution for the planet and its soil which is one of our most precious resources," Sage chef-owner Mollie Engelhart said in an open letter. A true Burbank institution, The SmokeHouse came to be just as men were returning from World War II. Adjacent to the Warner Brothers lot, the place is still an occasional stop for hungry execs looking to fill up on tableside-carved chateaubriand.

If patrons ordered the former, the cut they got depended on what was available in the kitchen. As a result, customers' experiences of Delmonico's steak varied widely with some given succulent, tender cuts while others received those of a less desirable nature. It was only after the standardization of beef cuts, which occurred in the latter half of the 20th century, that diners could be sure of exactly what they were ordering.

In these spaces, all patrons were crammed together at large tables and food was served family-style at a specific hour. Jeff Mastro is the founder of Steak 48, and he's staked (no pun intended) his reputation on his restaurants. He takes things very seriously, and that means his Steak 48 is one of the steakhouses that has vowed never to use frozen steaks. They're also leaps and bounds ahead of the rest of the pack when it comes to sheer luxury.

Chef Walter Nunez assembles a crowd-pleasing menu of clams casino, gnocchi with lobster, and lamb shank doused in rosemary. The main draw is an eight-ounce filet, bone-in tomahawk, but the wagyu flight showcasing two-ounce portions from the US, Australia, and Japan is equally great. Backed by heavy hitters like Dr. Dre and NBA legend Jerry West, this Sherman Oaks steakhouse opened in November 2023. Try the petit filets, dry-aged 42-ounce tomahawk steak, or choose from three different types of wagyu. Order the caprese-inspired martini shaken with Grey Goose, Campari, tomato simple syrup, and sherry vinegar, and garnished with fresh mozzarella, and enjoy the entire meal.

While exact revenue and growth numbers are difficult to pin down, it's safe to say that one of the best indicators of the success of this restaurant is that yes, they're opening new locations. It was still the early days of 2023 when they opened a Beverly Hills location, and if there's anything that says pricey, it's Beverly Hills. Yes, there's a raw bar, an in-house butcher, and a 3,000-bottle wine vault.

She said that although she was unfamiliar with the house she felt that she and Shari connected on the idea of the family’s story being an important part of the book. Perhaps the most famous shot of the Stahl house, photographed by Julius Shulman in 1960. I found these photos from our 2009 visit to the Stahl House just this week, hidden in a set of photos I had snapped on my phone. I had thought the only pictures I had taken were lost forever in an hard drive failure, so I was thrilled to have the chance to, once again, enjoy this excellent view. The transparent glass walls is underscored by the open floor plans and finished metal panels of the cover plate, which appears to extend throughout the house from side to side without interruption.

LA’s Stahl House: Mid-century Modern Masterpiece in the Hollywood Hills

Julius Shulman’s iconic nighttime photo of Case Study House #22—with its cantilevered glass-walled living room hovering above the city lights of sprawling Los Angeles—is arguably the most famous image of residential architecture. Yet the story behind this remarkable building—how it came into being and the experience of living there—is far less known. A deep and detailed account with abundant images, it’s a biography of a house and its owners—and the book’s first half, in particular, is a great read. It was taken at night in the 1960’s; two young women sitting in a modern, glass-walled living room perched on the edge of the Hollywood Hills. The valley below is lit up with twinkling lights for as far as you can see and their house seems to float over the city.

House Republicans have not yet publicly released any such proposed ballot measures. Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision guaranteed the constitutional right to an abortion nationwide. “Make no mistake, Arizonans are living in 1864 now because Donald Trump dismantled Roe v. Wade,” Democratic state Sen. Priya Sundareshan of Tucson said in a news conference before the vote organized by the Biden campaign and the Arizona Democratic Party. To demonstrate your support for the Stahl House and to ensure the appeal is granted (sending the proposed project back for review), please sign on to the Save the Stahl House campaign. People can still tour the house and it’s still maintained by the Stahl family.

There is a chance that if a repeal is approved by the House, the measure could be sent to the Senate immediately, but it would take several days of work before it could be up for a final vote. Democrats had counted on Rep. David Cook’s support for the repeal motion. ”The last thing we should be doing today is repealing a law that has been enacted and reaffirmed by the Legislature several times,” he said. He defended the court’s ruling, as he urged lawmakers to reject the call for a repeal. Stahl Hamilton, a Tucson Democrat who sponsored House Bill 2677, predicted if Republicans continue to refuse to allow a vote on repeal, they will pay a price in this year’s elections. But in the Senate, Republicans Ken Bennett of Prescott, T.J. Shope of Coolidge and Shawnna Bolick of Phoenix joined Democrats to reject three GOP attempts to shut down a vote to introduce a repeal bill.

The Stahl House (also called Case Study House #22) was built by architect Pierre Koenig in 1960, it was originally part of the esteemed Case Study House program and it’s considered one of the more historic buildings in Los Angeles’ 20th Century modernist architecture. The Stahl Family commissioned design and construction of the house back in the 50’s and continues to own and operate it. One of the original owners (Carlotta Stahl) lived in the house until just recently, vacating it on occasion when the home was rented out for special events and movies and TV filming.

The gridded streets of Los Angeles already smothered the flats, but the hills were still blanketed with trees and coastal scrub. The lot they coveted was not yet a scarce commodity, just one of many tempting spaces waiting for new construction. It was known to some locals as “Pecker Point,” a scenic overlook that happened to be a popular spot for necking.

Case Study Houses

Below, we will be taking a look at the history of the Stahl house as well as answering the question of why the house is so popular. Case Study House #22, aka Stahl House, is a modernist styled house in the Hollywood Hills section of Los Angeles, California that was designed by Pierre Koenig. Photographic and anecdotal evidence suggests that the architect's client, Buck Stahl, may have provided an inspiration for the overall structure. John Entenza, editor of Arts & Architecture magazine, invited Koenig to participate in his Case Study House program in 1950, after seeing a home Koenig had designed as a student at USC.

Reproductive rights advocates say the issue has mobilized voters and report that people are seeking out signature-gatherers and asking about locations where their friends and family can sign to put abortion access on the ballot. Roughly 100 people gathered outside the Capitol early Wednesday at a Right for Life event to remind GOP lawmakers who might waver, and support the repeal, of their views. They prayed for lawmakers to “stand for those who cannot stand for themselves,” passing out plastic yellow flowers and red rose buds. Who hasn’t seen the iconic image of architect Pierre Koenig’s Stahl House (Case Study House #22), dramatically soaring over the Los Angeles basin?

Apparently, the Stahls had a lot of ideas for the house that were in stark contrast to what was proposed by Koenig. One such example was a butterfly roof that Buck had planned for the house, as well as curves throughout the design. The Stahl couple, Carlotta and Buck, bought the vacant land on which the Stahl house now prominently rests, in 1954. It was only in 1957 that Pierre Koenig was commissioned by the Stahls to design the popular home.

The house is arranged in an L-shaped, with a wing in the bedrooms and common areas, extending into space, on the other, with the bathrooms in the intersection. Carlotta Stahl had seen the ground when she spent the weekend in a house on the other side. The owner was there by chance and the purchase was completed in only two and a half hours. Since 1962, the use of this house as a stage for film and advertising has provided a second source of income to Stahl. Carlotta left it empty if a home was needed during the shooting and rented a room at Chateau Marmont, just below the house in Sunset Boulevard. Stahl House is an attractive and fascinating building, so if you have enough time and want to visit it, it's a good idea to book as far in advance as possible, as tours usually sell out.

Interestingly, however, the studies that did reach construction were almost all built in Los Angeles and neighboring suburbs. The program ran from 1945 to nearly 1965—almost 20 years in the making. The Stahl House was commissioned by the family in 1957 to Pierre Koenig after a long struggle to find an architect who would work with the difficult, steep terrain of the Hollywood Hills. However, it is this location that gives the home its breathtaking views of the city laid out below. The two-bedroom house features an astonishing 260-degree clear view from the mountains to the sea, which the owner, Buck Stahl, claimed was his idea.

Furniture design company Design Within Reach recently furnished the Stahl interior with fresh new furniture pieces. After 4 years of paying off the mortgage for the house, Buck Stahl himself decided to start preparing the site for construction, without any building plans. He knew it would be a long and difficult process to prepare a flat surface to build his dream home on such a steep slope, which made the decision for him to start doing it himself, an easy one. In 1964, Koenig was asked to join the architecture faculty at USC, where he taught for forty years.

An embodiment of the California lifestyle, this informal plan allowed the hosts in the kitchen to converse with guests in the dining area through a long, open, pass-through window underneath a row of high ribbon cabinets. The exposed beam roof extends seven feet over the terrace and edge of the pool to shade the interior from the sun. True to the ethos of the Case Study House Program, the design and choice of materials allowed for quick, easy construction.
